Typically, vehicles like cars or motorcycles need a particle filtration efficiency of at least 10 microns to prevent any foreign objects from passing through the intake system and potentially causing damage to the mechanical components downstream (such as Air Flow Sensors, injectors, valves, and segments). Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) air filters are usually made of paper and their main purpose is to protect the engine. However, these filters have a high resistance to airflow, leading to reduced inlet pressure and decreased engine performance. On the other hand, BMC air filters offer significantly improved airflow. Additionally, unlike conventional paper filters that need to be replaced during maintenance, BMC air filters are reusable and have a lifespan equal to that of the vehicle itself.

Synthetic filters, another type of air filter available in the market, have been produced by BMC for non-road applications. The main difference between BMC oiled cotton filters and synthetic filters (made of materials like plastic canvas) lies in their impurities stoppage mechanism. Synthetic filters allow particles of the same size as the micro-filter material to pass through, meaning that an 80 micron hole in the filter allows all particles smaller than that size to pass, while only stopping particles larger than the hole size (for instance, sand particles are about 50 microns in size). On the other hand, cotton filters have a looser structure that enables a large volume of air to pass through, and by combining multiple layers containing oil, they effectively stop impurities from 7 microns and above.
